Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) is a technology of indoor and vehicular environmental control. Its goal is to provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. HVAC system design is based on the principles of engineering and heat transfer. The term refrigeration is sometimes added to the field converting HVAC into HVACR.
HVAC is an important part of residential structures such including nuclear homes, apartments, hotels and all buildings of residence and occupation. Medium to large industrial and office buildings, such as skyscrapers and hospitals, require safe and healthy environment conditions. These structures are regulated with respect to temperature and humidity, by utilizing fresh air from outdoors. Ventilation in HVAC is the process of exchanging air in any space to provide high indoor air quality; which also involves temperature control. Ventilation removes unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduces outside air, and eliminates air stagnation through circulation processes. Individual systems In modern building structures, the design, installation, and control systems are all integrated into one or more HVAC systems. For very small buildings, contractors normally estimate the capacity and then design the system. Then, they select the appropriate refrigerant and various components needed. For larger buildings, engineers analyze, design, and specify the HVAC systems. Specialty HVAC contractors then fabricate and integrate the systems. Building permits and code-compliance inspections of the installations are normally required for all building sizes. HVAC industry and standards The HVAC industry is a worldwide enterprise, with roles including operation and maintenance, system design and construction, equipment manufacturing, and sales. The HVAC industry has regulating bodies and standards organizations such as HARDI, ASHRAE, SMACNA, ACCA, International Mechanical Code, and AMCA. These regulatory agencies have been established to support the industry and encourage high standards and achievement. The starting point in carrying out an estimate, both for cooling and heating, depends on the exterior climate and specific interior conditions. However, before taking up the heat load calculation, it is necessary to find fresh air requirements for each area in detail, as pressurization is an important consideration.
